A long strand on Killala Bay, backed by dunes, with the town and pier at one end. By the harbour the waves are tiny and gentle, a good place to learn. Walk along the beach and they slowly grow. A big swell brings a right onto the reef behind the harbour.

When it doesn't

✕ West or south-west swells mostly miss it, and onshore northerly wind spoils it.

  • rocks
  • rips

Local tips

Learn near the harbour, where it is smallest. For the reef, walk along the rocks behind the harbour; don't drive or park in the field, which is private land.

Getting there

Park by the pier or on the road in town. Limited parking on the beach is allowed on very busy days (EPA).

Travel notes

How often it works
Killala Bay blocks a lot of swell, so it only breaks on a fairly big swell from the north. That makes it hit and miss, but waves can come in any season.
Crowd and vibe
Usually quiet, and the locals are a bit reserved. If you go looking at the reefs nearby, where locals are more protective, stay low-key.
Camping and vans
A caravan park backs the beach (EPA beach profile). Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, a summer lifeguard and a surf school; cafés and shops in Enniscrone town.
Water quality
Rated Excellent by the EPA in 2025 and holds a Blue Flag and a Green Coast award.
