El Brusco, also called Helgueras, is the eastern end of the Trengandín beach, right under the Brusco hill. At high tide the sandbank throws fast, hollow rights and lefts with real power. It looks much smaller from the car park than it really is. It is one of the best beach breaks in Cantabria; some call it the best in Spain. It suits experienced surfers, and the crowd and local pecking order match its fame.

Local tips
Surf it around high tide, when the bank works. Walk down the beach before paddling out to see the real size. It is busy on weekdays and very crowded at weekends, with surfers from Santander and Bilbao. Arrive early, respect the locals and wait your turn.
Getting there
From Noja, follow the track to the far end of Trengandín beach. Then walk along the sand to the foot of the headland.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It works fairly often from autumn to spring, once a north-west swell of 1.5 m or more meets high tide. Summer flat spells and low tide shut it down.
- Crowd and vibe
- Crowded on weekdays and packed at weekends, with Noja locals, surfers from Santander and Bilbao, and travellers on the same peaks. Localism is the main danger listed, so wait your turn.
- Camping and vans
- There is no campsite at the headland. The Noja campsites (Los Molinos, Playa Joyel, Argos) are about 5 km west, and the paid motorhome park at Berria is about 1.5 km east. Nearest campsite about 5 km away.
- Facilities
- No services at the break, which is inside the Joyel marsh nature park; parking, bars, surf shops and schools are in Noja and Santoña.
- Water quality
- Helgueras (El Brusco) holds a Bandera Azul for 2026, so the water tested excellent the season before.
