Hardelot is a huge, straight north–south sand beach, far better known for sand yachting, kiting and speedsailing than for surf. A westerly Channel swell breaks over the shallow banks into average, short, often messy waves that only come now and then. At low tide the sand runs out a couple of hundred metres, so expect a long walk with the board; the tidal pools that fill and empty out there give beginners small waves. It is rarely surfed, so you will usually have it to yourself.

Local tips

Surf around mid tide. At high water there is no dry beach in places and the sea runs up against a wall of big rocks. At low tide you carry your board a long way and the water comes back fast over the flat sand, so do not leave bags on the beach. The north beach towards the Becque stream is the stretch used for surfing and kiting. Riding zones are marked, and the swimming area is kept clear.

Getting there

Park along the seafront and walk to the end of the sea wall for the north beach; the watersports and land-yacht base is at the southern end. The central beach has lifeguards in season.

Travel notes

How often it works
Unreliable. Wannasurf says it only breaks some of the time, because the very flat, shallow sandbanks turn west swell into short, choppy waves. It needs a clean west swell of a metre or more and a light east wind. Summer is usually flat.
Crowd and vibe
Wannasurf says it is empty on weekdays and weekends. You share the beach with kiters, land yachts and speedsailers, each kept to marked zones.
Camping and vans
A free motorhome parking area on avenue Joseph Lesur, a walk from the sea, takes about 35 vans for up to 48 hours. It only has bins. The nearest real campsite is Caravaning du Château d'Hardelot in Condette, a few kilometres inland, open April to October. Nearest campsite about 4 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, showers, restaurants and a sailing and land-yacht base along the seafront. Lifeguards watch the central beach in season, about 600 m south of the north beach where people surf.
Water quality
The ARS rated Neufchâtel-Hardelot good for 2025, after four years at only sufficient (2021–2024). The Becque stream reaches the sea at the north beach, so skip it after heavy rain.
