Kerhillio is the main surf beach of Erdeven, a long, flat stretch of sand in front of a large protected dune system at the northern end of the strand that runs down to the Quiberon peninsula. Shifting sandbars give short lefts and rights of ordinary power, occasionally lining up for longer rides when the banks are good. It picks up most Atlantic swell and is one of the standard places to learn and progress around Quiberon Bay, with surf schools working the beach. It is fully exposed to the wind and shares the water with kitesurfers, who have their own zone.

When it works

✓ A west or south-west swell of about 0.8 to 1.5 metres with light north-east to east wind, from low to mid tide on the push.

When it doesn't

✕ Any westerly or south-westerly breeze, which quickly turns it to chop, and big swells, when the banks close out and the rips strengthen.

Local tips

The lower half of the tide usually gives the steeper, faster waves; at high tide the waves soften and fatten. Walk along the beach to find the best-shaped bank rather than paddling out straight from the main access, and keep clear of the kitesurf zone and the summer swimming area marked by yellow buoys. Mornings before the wind gets up are often the cleanest.

Getting there

From the D781 between Plouharnel and Erdeven, turn towards Kerhillio; the beach is at the end of the road beside the municipal campsite, with large car parks behind the dunes (paid in season). Stay on the marked paths through the protected dunes; lifeguards cover the beach in July and August.

Travel notes

How often it works
Wannasurf calls it a regular spot, and surf-forecast rates it fairly consistent. It picks up most west swells, but summer is often flat.
Crowd and vibe
Weekdays are quiet, but weekends get crowded, and late July to August is busy with holidaymakers. The schools use it a lot, so spread out along the beach.
Camping and vans
The cheap municipal Camping de Kerhillio sits right behind the beach, a short walk from the waves. Camping Kerzerho is about 3 km away. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
In summer there is a lifeguard post, toilets and drinking water, and surf schools teach on the beach.
Water quality
The Kerhilio monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and the beach holds the 2026 Pavillon Bleu. In 2026, two of its 14 samples were only average.
