The Barre d'Étel is the shifting, crescent-shaped sandbank at the mouth of the Rivière d'Étel, between Plouhinec and Erdeven. It breaks only a few days a year, but when a solid swell meets it the wave is fast and hollow and peels like a reef, with short sections on most days and much longer rides on rare good ones. Strong tidal currents pour through the mouth, boats use the channel, and the bar has a long record of capsizes and groundings. It is for experienced surfers who know the place; do not paddle out on your first visit without local advice.

Local tips
The take-off is hard and the current constantly pulls you off position, so expect to paddle non-stop and pick land marks. Full speed is needed to outrun the sections. Watch the semaphore and the boats crossing the bar, and stay out of the channel. Local fishermen historically took a dim view of surfers here, so keep a low profile.
Getting there
Drive into Étel and follow the signs for Kerhilio; parking near the bar is a few minutes' walk from the water. The Étel semaphore overlooks the mouth from the Plouhinec side.
History
A signal station guiding boats across the bar has operated since 1868. In October 1958 a roller on the bar capsized Alain Bombard's survival-raft trial and the lifeboat sent to help, killing nine people.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It rarely breaks: wannasurf estimates about five days a year. It needs a solid swell, the right tide and a calm sea state, and the sandbars move after every storm.
- Crowd and vibe
- Wannasurf lists it as empty on weekdays and weekends. The few people who surf it are experienced locals, and fishermen once saw surfers here as reckless, so keep a low profile.
- Camping and vans
- The nearest campsites are in Erdeven: the municipal Camping de Kerhillio and Camping Kerzerho, both about 5 km by road. Nearest campsite about 5 km away.
- Facilities
- Étel town has cafés, restaurants and shops close by, but there is nothing for surfers right at the bar.
- Water quality
- The nearest monitoring points, Kerminihy (Erdeven) and Le Stang (Étel), were rated good every season from 2022 to 2025. The river mouth carries run-off from the ria, so avoid it after heavy rain.
