Esposende's town beach runs north from the mouth of the Cávado river. Wannasurf describes two main waves: a right of 100–150 m off the rocks at one end of the beach, and shorter, hollow and fast lefts and rights in front of the houses. Sand from the river shapes the banks, so the best peak moves from year to year.

When it doesn't

Local tips

Surf-forecast and wannasurf both say mid tide on the rising tide is best. Strong rips run near the river mouth, so paddle out with care.

Getting there

Esposende is right off the IC1 between Viana do Castelo and Póvoa de Varzim. Park along the seafront road and walk onto the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
Surf-forecast rates it fairly consistent and able to work all year. It needs a bit more swell than the open beaches to the south.
Crowd and vibe
Few surfers on weekdays and crowded at weekends, according to wannasurf. Contributors mention some localism, so respect the regulars.
Camping and vans
Parque de Campismo de Fão, a few hundred metres from the beach between Fão and Ofir, is about 2.5 km south across the river bridge. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
Facilities
In the bathing season there are lifeguards, a first-aid post, toilets, showers and beach bars. Cafés and shops are in town, a short walk away.
Water quality
The Suave Mar beach was rated excellent in APA's latest annual classification and flies a Blue Flag in 2026.
