La Gravière is widely rated the best beach break in Europe and one of the best in the world. It throws thick, fast, sand-pumping barrels very close to the beach, with winter pits of 3 m and more, thanks to swell arriving at full power over the Gouf de Capbreton. Rides are short but intense, rights and lefts off shifting peaks. It is a wave for experts and pros only, with a very high level in the water and a protective local crew.

When it doesn't
✕ High tide, which leaves only a punishing shorebreak, the incoming tide, which tends to close it out, and any onshore wind.

Local tips
Surf it on the low or falling tide and only if your level matches it. Keep a low profile: localism is real, boards get broken in the shorebreak and the rips are powerful. Do not sleep in your car or camp in front of the dune.
Getting there
Right of Hossegor's central beach as you face the sea; park at the dune entrance toward Seignosse or on boulevard de la Dune and walk a few minutes. Town parking is paid from May to September.
History
La Gravière was the favourite venue of the Quiksilver Pro France, the Championship Tour stop held in Hossegor and its neighbours each autumn until 2019. Kelly Slater won there in 2012, and Jérémy Florès won the last CT edition in 2019.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Wannasurf rates it regular. The Gouf de Capbreton, a deep undersea canyon, sends swell straight onto these sandbanks, so it works on any decent swell. But the famous barrels need good sand and a low or falling tide.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is one of the most crowded and competitive line-ups in Europe. There are few surfers on weekdays and a pack at weekends. Localism is strong, so only paddle out if your level matches the wave. Some visitors find locals friendly in the water but warn of hostility to vans parked by the dune.
- Camping and vans
- Camping du Lac is on the far side of the lake, roughly 2 km away. The town motorhome aire on the route des Lacs (84 places, run by Camping-Car Park) is the legal place to sleep in a van. Wannasurf users advise against sleeping in your car by the dune. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
- Facilities
- The central Hossegor seafront is a few minutes away, with toilets, showers, cafés, restaurants, surf shops and lifeguards in summer. Town parking is paid from May to September.
- Water quality
- All seven of Soorts-Hossegor's bathing sites are rated excellent in the official French rating (national open data, 2022).
