Arenillas is a small cove at Islares, west of Castro Urdiales and on the east side of the Agüera river mouth. It is sheltered, so it needs a decent swell before anything happens. Then it gives gentle rights and lefts over sand beside a rocky overhang, with a right off the river channel. It is a quiet spot for learners, away from the busy beaches.

When it works
✓ A strong north-west swell of about 1.5 m or more, with a south, south-west or south-east wind, on the low and rising tide.
When it doesn't
✕ Small swells don't reach it, so summer is usually flat, and it fills in at high tide or goes shapeless in a northerly wind.

Local tips
Locals go in from the steps by the rock overhang and let the current carry them out to the take-off. It is quiet in winter. At weekends day-trippers from Bilbao fill it up, which feels busy for such a small wave, so share the few peaks politely.
Getting there
Leave the A-8 at the Islares exit and park on the dirt area by the beach. The break is a few minutes' walk away.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It works fairly often in the cooler months once a good north-west swell arrives. The small, sheltered cove gives smaller, shorter waves than the open beaches, and it is usually flat in summer.
- Crowd and vibe
- Empty on weekdays and busy at weekends, mostly with day-trippers from Bilbao. No localism is reported, but the take-off spot is tiny, so be patient.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Playa Arenillas sits right above the cove. It opens roughly April to September and is often full in July and August. The access road is tight for long vans, and Camping de Oriñón is under a kilometre further west. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Summer showers, toilets and lifeguards, a small car park, board hire, and the campsite bar and restaurant.
- Water quality
- The water is clear on calm days. Arenillas is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list, and no official Náyade rating was found.
