Boutrouilles is a north-facing white-sand beach on the Côte des Légendes at Kerlouan, where rounded granite boulders pin the sand bars in place. It picks up more swell than most of the north coast, though it is still often flat in summer, and a north-west swell brings short, fast, often hollow lefts and rights; the left beside the big rock is the fastest. The waves that bounce off the rocks make it a long-time bodyboard favourite, and on its day it is a regional classic. It works best from mid to high tide, but the top of a big spring tide turns it into a heavy shorebreak.

Local tips
Plan around the tide: the banks come alive on the rising tide from mid towards high, and on big tides high water turns into a dangerous shorebreak. Watch for underwater boulders going in and out. The regulars, many of them bodyboarders, are good surfers who expect visitors to wait their turn. Summer weekends get busy, while weekdays out of season are much quieter. Bring a thick wetsuit from autumn on.
Getting there
Follow the Route de Boutrouilles / Route des dunes from Kerlouan village to the free beach car park, less than five minutes' walk from the sand; toilets and a campsite are nearby. A surf school gives lessons on the beach from April to November.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fickle. This beach faces north, so it only works when a strong north-west to north swell arrives. It is often flat in summer and comes alive from autumn to spring. Granite boulders hold the sandbanks in place, so the waves are fairly dependable once there is swell.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually quiet on weekdays but busy at weekends when the waves are good. Expect plenty of young bodyboarders, especially outside the peak summer weeks. The regulars surf well and are generally relaxed with visitors who wait their turn.
- Camping and vans
- The small municipal Camping de Neiz Vran is about 1.5 km west. It is open from mid-March to mid-November and also takes motorhomes. The municipal Camping de Rudoloc sits behind the dunes about 2.5 km east, open mid-June to end of August only. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
- Facilities
- The official listing shows toilets, drinking water and a summer first-aid post, but no showers. The Pagan surf school teaches here from spring to autumn; for food, head to Ménéham or Kerlouan village.
- Water quality
- Rated excellent by the French health ministry every year from 2022 to 2025. All 2026 summer samples came back good.
