Le Dossen is a huge, west-facing beach of sand and dunes at Santec, facing the island of Sieck, and the main surf spot of the Léon coast. It is an easy-going beach break with many peaks, rarely heavy even in a bigger swell; it is best at high tide and often better near the river mouth at the southern end. It is very exposed to the wind, so it needs a calm or offshore day. The beach is also a well-known windsurf and kitesurf spot.

Local tips

High tide near the middle of the beach is the usual choice; from low to quarter tide, the left-hand side by the river can be worth a look. With so many peaks it is easy to find space even when it is busy. Expect it to be blown out on many days, so watch for calm mornings or easterly winds.

Getting there

Signposted from Santec, near Roscoff. The beach is reached from Rue du Théven Braz, with parking a short walk from the sand.

History

The beach hosted the Naish Wave Party windsurfing event in 2000.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fairly consistent on west to north-westerly swell outside summer, when it is mostly flat. Wind is the real limit on this very open beach. In February, its best month, surf-forecast finds it clean only about a fifth of the time and spoiled by wind nearly two-thirds.
Crowd and vibe
Few surfers on weekdays and crowded at weekends. The waves break in many places along the beach, so people spread out and it rarely feels packed. The mood is relaxed, with surf schools, kitesurfers and windsurfers sharing the beach.
Camping and vans
The municipal Camping du Dossen on rue du Théven Bras sits in the dunes just behind the beach. Pitches are unmarked and you cannot book. It is open in summer, with water, showers and paid electricity for motorhomes. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
A beach with summer lifeguards, a first-aid post, toilets, a bar-restaurant and parking. Lessons come from the École de Surf du Léon, the Dossen Surf School and the Rêves de Mer watersports centre.
Water quality
Rated Excellent in the official 2025 bathing-water ranking, with all fourteen summer tests good. The small Guillec river reaches the sea at the southern end.
