The Pointe du Lizay, at the north-west tip of Île de Ré past the Baleines lighthouse, is the island's best-regarded wave and one of the few spots that faces straight into a north-west swell. A peak over sand and a rock slab throws a fast, hollow left and a shorter, softer right. Up to about a metre and a half it is fun for confident surfers; bigger swells make the left powerful and hard to handle over the shallow reef. It only lights up a few times a season, and when it does the line-up fills quickly.

Local tips
The left is the prize: it is quicker and hollower than the right, so expect the better surfers to sit on it. Stay off it around low tide when the slab is exposed, and keep an eye on size, because above roughly a metre and a half it turns heavy. Petit Bec next door and Diamond Head on the same point are the alternatives when the Lizay peak is crowded or too big.
Getting there
Cross the toll bridge and drive towards Les Portes-en-Ré; at the hamlet of La Rivière take the second left (the first is one-way), then the first right, and follow the lane through the Lizay pine forest to the beach car parks. From there it is a short walk.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Surf-forecast calls it inconsistent. The point faces north-west, so it needs a north-west swell, which is rarer than the usual west to south-west swells.
- Crowd and vibe
- Wannasurf says there are no heavy crowds, though the better surfers sit on the hollow left. Weekdays are often empty.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Le Phare and Camping Seasonova Île de Ré in Les Portes-en-Ré are about 2 km away. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
- Facilities
- There are car parks in the pine forest but no lifeguards, toilets or cafés at the point.
- Water quality
- The nearest monitoring point, Couny beach, was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and all ten 2026 samples were good.
