The best-known wave in the Vendée south of Les Sables: a long, straight, exposed beach break at the southern end of the Plage des Conches, under dunes and the Longeville pine forest. Shifting sandbars throw fast, hollow, powerful lefts and rights that often barrel, which is why it is compared with the Landes beach breaks. Quality depends heavily on how the banks have settled. It is a wave for experienced surfers when the swell is up, and the lineup is crowded through summer and on good weekends.

Local tips

Low tide gives the heaviest waves breaking in very little water and boards often snap; high tide gives longer, more forgiving rides. Do not park right at the spot: use the big car park at access 13 and walk about 600 m south along the forest path between accesses 14 and 16. The lineup has a local core and some hostility to visitors has been reported, so wait your turn and do not drop in. Beginners should stay at Les Conches on strong swells.

Getting there

From Longeville take the D105 towards Les Conches; park at the main car park (access 13) and walk south through the forest to beach access 16 or 17, about 10 minutes. The Longeville Surf Club and surf schools are close by.

History

The Bud Bud Contest, a surf, bodyboard and longboard event run by the Longeville Surf Club, has been held at the spot most Septembers for over two decades and is one of the best-known regional contests in France.
