Mers-les-Bains is a shingle beach that turns to sand lower down the tide, between the Le Tréport harbour jetty and the chalk cliffs of Mers. It needs a solid north-west to north swell and breaks only now and then; one guide ranks it near the bottom for consistency, and most visitors find it flat. When it works it gives soft, short lefts and rights that suit beginners and bodyboarders, and it stays quiet.

When it works
✓ A NW to N swell of 1–2 m with a southerly or south-easterly wind, best on the falling tide.
When it doesn't
✕ South-westerly weather, which leaves it flat in the lee of the coast, onshore northerlies, or high tide, when the waves dump on the steep shingle.

Local tips
Surf in front of the main beach rather than near the cliff, where there are rocks. Aim for the falling tide: at high water the shorebreak and current are at their worst, and getting out means climbing a steep bank of pebbles. Anglers use the beach too, so give their lines a wide berth.
Getting there
Park along the seafront and walk a minute or two to the beach. Kiting is banned here all year.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- One of the least reliable spots on this coast. It only works on a good north-west groundswell. Surf-forecast's figures show it too small most of the time, with clean waves on only about 1% of January days.
- Crowd and vibe
- Quiet. It is empty on weekdays and has a few surfers at weekends, even when it works. Anglers on the beach are the main people to keep clear of.
- Camping and vans
- A motorhome aire on chemin de la Petite Allée, near a supermarket, is about a 20-minute walk from the beach. It has about 45 places for roughly €10–13 a night. Flower Camping Le Rompval at Blengues, about 2.5 km from the sea, opens April to early November. Le Tréport, across the harbour, has more motorhome aires. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Toilets, showers, cafés and restaurants along the promenade, a sailing centre and summer lifeguards.
- Water quality
- The ARS rated it excellent every year from 2022 to 2025, after an insufficient year in 2018. The Bresle river and Le Tréport harbour are right next to the beach, so stay out after heavy rain.
