Plage Sud starts on the south bank of the Courant de Mimizan, close to the town, and runs for kilometres toward Lespecier and Contis. Near the river mouth the outflow shapes the sand and can break the swell up into more sheltered peaks, while further south the beach turns wild and empty. Surfers and fishermen both like it for its waves, and the banks are often a little punchier than on the north side. It suits intermediates who are happy to read a beach on their own.

Local tips
Only the stretch in front of avenue de l'Océan is lifeguarded in summer, so if you walk south for empty peaks you are on your own. Stay out of the main river channel on the outgoing tide. Lespecier, at the far south end, is the wildest beach in Mimizan and worth checking when the main beach is crowded.
Getting there
From the centre of Mimizan-Plage, cross to the south bank of the courant and park along avenue de l'Océan; Lespecier has its own car park and facilities further south.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- South of the river mouth the beach is just as open and works on most swells. The river helps shape the sandbanks. It closes out when the swell gets big.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is quiet most of the year. It only gets busy in high summer, in front of avenue de l'Océan. Walk south towards Lespecier and you will often surf alone.
- Camping and vans
- Mimizan's Camping-Car Park aire is about 50 m from the Plage Sud. It has 85 places, is open all year and has a 72-hour limit, but reviewers mention road noise. Camping de la Plage (Siblu) is on the other side of the river. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
- Facilities
- The lifeguarded beach by avenue de l'Océan has toilets and is close to shops and cafés. Lespecier, further south, has its own car park and basic facilities.
- Water quality
- Four of Mimizan's five bathing sites are rated excellent in the official French rating (national open data, 2022), and one only sufficient. Stay away from the river mouth after heavy rain.
