Salinas is the cradle of Spanish surfing: the first surf school in Spain opened here in the 1960s. The beach is a sweep of sand more than 2 km long in Castrillón, facing north-west and surfable all year. Peaks break right and left and can be powerful on good days, on swells from about half a metre to over 3 m. The west end, by La Peñona and the town, gets the most punch and holds the biggest swell. This end, near the Balneario and La Pirámide, is also sheltered from north-west wind. The middle of the beach works best in south and south-east winds. It is one of the most popular beaches in Asturias and is crowded with schools and clubs.

Local tips

The beach is very busy, so respect the local surf community and be careful where you park. Visitors have reported tension with some locals. Sand loss along the promenade wall can make waves bounce back at high tide. The water quality is not ideal because of the town and the estuary nearby. October is often the best month.

Getting there

The beach runs along the Salinas promenade, with parking and showers right behind it. The 2 km promenade leads to the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum and viewpoint at the west end.

History

Salinas hosts the long-running Vans Salinas Longboard Festival every summer, with contests and concerts.

Travel notes

How often it works
One of the most reliable beaches in central Asturias, with waves on roughly 150 days a year. It is open to north-west swell, and its long curve gives a sheltered corner at the west end when the wind turns.
Crowd and vibe
Quiet enough on weekdays but packed at weekends and all summer, with surf schools and a big local scene. Most visitors find the line-up friendly, though some report tension with a few locals, so give way and park with care. The longboard festival fills the town at the end of July.
Camping and vans
Camping Las Gaviotas sits on the seafront at Santa María del Mar, about 3 km west. In 2026 it opens daily from mid-June to late September and only at weekends and holidays in spring and autumn. Vans can use the free área de autocaravanas El Agüil in Salinas, about 1 km from the beach, with 5 places and a 48-hour limit. Nearest campsite about 3 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, showers, beach bars, cafés and restaurants on the promenade, surf and longboard schools, and lifeguard posts in summer.
Water quality
Rated Excellent under the EU bathing-water rules in 2025 at both sampling points, and it holds a Bandera Azul for 2026. Even so, surf guides and some surfers say the water can feel dirty, as the beach is urban and the Avilés estuary lies just east.
