Xagó is a long, dune-backed beach on the west side of Cabo Peñas, near the mouth of the Avilés estuary. It is one of the most consistent spots in Asturias: it works on small swells, so it gets surfed in summer too, and it is the beach to check when everything else is flat. It works at every tide, with peaks breaking left and right along the whole beach. The east end is sheltered by cliffs and best at low tide; the more exposed west end likes the rising and high tide. It suits all levels, and surf schools use it from spring to autumn.

When it works

✓ A 1–2 m north-west swell with a south-east or east wind, at any tide: low tide at the east end, rising to high at the west end.

When it doesn't

✕ Westerly or northerly wind, which blows straight in, and big swells, which close it out.

  • pollution

Local tips

Match the end of the beach to the tide: the east corner at low tide, the west end as the tide rises. On busy days more than 40 surfers can be out, so spread along the sand. Mind the currents, which are strong on bigger days.

Getting there

Park in the pine wood behind the beach. There are toilets, showers, restaurants and summer lifeguards.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very consistent, with waves around 150 days a year. It picks up small swells and is the beach to check when everything else is flat, but it can't hold big swells.
Crowd and vibe
Busy at summer weekends, with more than 40 surfers on the best days, as Avilés and Salinas are close. Weekdays and winter are calmer, and visitors describe the locals as friendly.
Camping and vans
There is no campsite at Xagó. The nearest is Camping El Molino at Bañugues, about 9 km east. The Salinas campsites are closer in a straight line but a long drive around the Avilés estuary. Nearest campsite about 9 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, showers, summer lifeguards, beach bars, a picnic area with barbecues and parking in the pine wood.
Water quality
The beach sits near the mouth of the Avilés estuary, which has a long history of industrial pollution. Xagó is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list and no official rating was found.
