Bañugues is a sheltered bay on the east side of Cabo Peñas, inside the Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape. It only works when a big north to north-north-east swell wraps in. Then it gives a long left over sand and rock, clean and protected at low tide, while the west-facing beaches are maxed out. On normal days the water is calm and suits beginners and children.

When it works
✓ A big north swell of 2.5 m or more that wraps into the bay, at low tide with a south or south-east wind.
When it doesn't
✕ North-west swells largely miss it and small or medium swells leave it flat; high tide or a northerly wind kills it.

Local tips
Check it when the west-facing beaches beyond the cape are maxed out. Low tide is the time for the left. Watch for rocks and pools as the water drops.
Getting there
There is free parking at the beach, showers and summer lifeguards. A campsite is nearby.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fickle. The bay is sheltered, so it is flat most of the year and only gets good waves in strong swells.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually 10 to 20 people in the water, many of them beginners, paddle boarders and surf school groups. Local surfers often head to Verdicio or Xagó when the swell is normal.
- Camping and vans
- Camping El Molino is right by the beach, under 1 km away, and open all year except December. Next to it is an área de autocaravanas with about 25 paid spaces, open in summer and at weekends. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- Toilets, accessible showers, free parking, bars and lifeguards every day in summer.
- Water quality
- The water is calm and clean-looking, but Bañugues is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list and no official rating was found.
