Playa Grande, also called Cuberris, is a 250 m beach between cliffs at Ajo. It faces straight into the swell, so it is one of the most consistent spots in the area and works even in small summer swells. The main wave is a fast, powerful left, with short rights and lefts elsewhere on the bank. A strong current along the western side carries you out to the peak like a conveyor belt. Antuerta, the small beach next door, is a good back-up.

Local tips
The current along the west side helps on the way out but makes getting back to the beach hard work. Low tide and the first part of the rising tide are best. When the swell grows, Antuerta, beyond the Cárcabo point, takes over. It has powerful rights and lefts and copes better with north-west wind.
Getting there
Playa Grande is on the CA-141 coast road at Ajo, with a large car park above the beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Very consistent, and one of the few east Cantabria beaches that still has waves in summer. It faces north straight into the swell, so a small north-west swell is enough. It can't handle much size. When the swell grows, Antuerta takes over.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually few surfers on weekdays. It fills up at weekends and in summer, when it is often the only wave around. Expect locals, campers and school groups.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Playa de Ajo sits right above Cuberris beach, and Camping Arenas is a short walk away. Camping Cabo de Ajo, open all year, is about 1.5 km away near the lighthouse. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- A big car park, showers, a summer tourist office, restaurants and a short promenade, with surf schools in Ajo.
- Water quality
- No official water rating was found for Cuberris, and it is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list. Signs warn swimmers about strong currents.
