Les Cavaliers, on the south side of the long jetty north of Anglet, is the town's best-known and most powerful beach break. It is very consistent, often the biggest wave on the Anglet strip, and offshore wind turns its sandbars into hollow, tubing peaks. It holds a good swell without maxing out and has hosted high-level international contests. It suits strong intermediate and advanced surfers, and it is busy every day.

When it doesn't

Local tips

Paddle out along the jetty, where a rip runs seaward and makes a channel. Expect crowds on weekdays and heavy crowds on weekends; some locals are protective, so pick your waves carefully. Early mornings bring the best wind.

Getting there

At the north end of Anglet's beaches, with car parks behind the dune (paid for non-residents from May to October) and a bus stop nearby; there is a bar, toilets and a summer lifeguard post.

History

Les Cavaliers is Anglet's main contest venue and has hosted international surfing competitions.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very consistent. Wannasurf counts about 150 good days a year. The jetty holds the sand in place and the beach takes swell from any westerly direction, so it works when many spots are small.
Crowd and vibe
Crowded on weekdays and very crowded at weekends. Some locals are polite, others are protective, so stick to the rules and don't drop in.
Camping and vans
Anglet's year-round motorhome aire at La Barre is a short drive north. The only campsite in town is Eden Villages Bela Basque, above Lac de Brindos, about 5.5 km south. Nearest campsite about 5.5 km away.
Facilities
There is a bar, toilets, paid car parks behind the dune, a bus stop and a lifeguard post in summer.
Water quality
Rated excellent, and the beach flies the Pavillon Bleu (Blue Flag). After heavy rain the Adour can bring dirty water, and beaches may close for a few hours. Check the Kalilo app or the flags.
