Arrigunaga is a 600 m beach of sand and stones in Algorta, Getxo, at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary below the La Galea cliffs. Because it sits inside the estuary, it needs a strong north-west swell to break, often on days when the open beaches are maxed out. It then offers soft lefts and rights over sand and rock, good for gaining confidence. On very big days the current can be strong.

Local tips
Driftwood and harbour debris can float around after storms, so watch the water and shower well afterwards. Local schools rent boards and give lessons. On flat days there is a skate park right behind the beach.
Getting there
From the BI-637 turn into Algorta and follow the road down to the beach, though parking can be hard to find. Bidezabal metro station is within walking distance.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Wannasurf says it only breaks sometimes. It sits inside the Bilbao river mouth and needs a very strong northwest swell.
- Crowd and vibe
- Few surfers are out on weekdays, but it is crowded at weekends, when the open beaches are too big.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Sopelana, on Calle Atxabiribil in Sopela, is open all year and has pitches for vans and motorhomes. It is about 5 km away by road. Nearest campsite about 5 km away.
- Facilities
- Parking near the beach can be hard. You can take the metro to Bidezabal instead. There is a skate park in front of the break.
- Water quality
- The Basque Government's 2026 rating is excellent. But wannasurf lists pollution, with driftwood and harbour rubbish in the water, so shower well after surfing. We could not confirm Blue Flag status or any official note on run-off after rain.
