Arrietara and Atxabiribil in Sopela form one continuous beach below flysch cliffs, separated only by their access points. It is one of the main surf centres in Bizkaia. It is exposed to the open sea and very consistent, picking up most north and north-west swells, and its mix of sand and rock gives varied peaks in both directions. Waves range from soft and steady to hollow and powerful, and the beach has hosted European junior tour events.

Local tips
Surfers from Bilbao keep the line-up busy all year, so expect company and stick to a peak that matches your level. Watch for rocky patches between the sandy peaks. At low tide El Sitio, at the northern end, offers a left on flat rock.
Getting there
There are car parks and bars on the clifftop, with paths and stairs down to the sand. In summer a municipal bus runs from Sopela town centre to the beaches.
