Bizkaia in the guides

  • Surfing in January
Mundaka is at its most consistent in winter, and the cliffs of Sopela and Getxo hide big-wave reefs like Meñakoz and Punta Galea. Basque tourism names October to February as the big-wave season.
  • Surfing in February
Mundaka is still in season, and the Sopela coast gives everything from big-wave reefs to friendly beaches.
  • Surfing in July
July is peak holiday time across Europe. The water is warm in the south, the beaches are lively and the waves are usually small and friendly, which makes it a great month to learn, and a tricky one to find space.
  • Surfing in August
August has the warmest sea of the year almost everywhere in Europe, and the busiest beaches. Waves are mostly small, but late in the month the first autumn swells start to show, and Galicia hosts the Pantín Classic.
  • Surfing in September
The holiday crowds leave, the sea is close to its warmest and autumn swells start to roll in, from Hossegor and Ericeira to Cornwall, Bundoran and Thurso: September is the month many locals wait for all year.
  • Surfing in October
October is many surfers' favourite month in Europe: real groundswell, water that still holds its summer warmth, and beaches that empty out after the holidays. The reefs of Portugal, Ireland and Scotland start their season too.
  • Surfing in November
Mundaka and the reefs below the Sopela cliffs start to work in earnest; on the biggest days the sheltered beaches inside the Bilbao estuary come alive.
  • Surfing in December
Mundaka and the big-wave reefs of Sopela and Getxo are in season; on huge days the estuary beaches give a softer alternative.
  • Basque coast road trip
Mundaka's world-famous left, the wild beach at Laga, Bakio below Gaztelugatxe and the cliffs and reefs of Sopela.
  • Uncrowded winter waves
Winter brings the best swells of the year, but the famous spots get crowded whenever they break. These are quieter beaches and breaks across Europe: Scotland's north coast and islands, the west of Ireland, Portugal's Alentejo, the Azores, Norway and Denmark, plus empty corners of Normandy, the Médoc and north Spain.
  • Big waves and expert spots
Mundaka's left, plus the big-wave reefs of Meñakoz and Punta Galea near Bilbao.
