Xivares is an exposed sandy beach in Carreño, west of Gijón, about 800 m long at low tide. It faces the Aboño power station and industrial area. It catches north-north-west swell, with left and right peaks across the bay over sand and rock. The most popular is a fast right near the mouth of the Aboño river, which keeps reshaping the banks. The peaks work best around low tide. The industrial neighbours don't help water quality.

When it works

✓ A 1.5–2.5 m north-north-west swell at low tide, with a south or south-west wind.

When it doesn't

✕ High tide softens the banks, a northerly wind spoils it, and big, windy days bring strong currents.

Watch out for

  • rocks
  • currents
  • pollution

Best months

January, February, March, September, October, November, December

Local tips

Head for the right by the river mouth at low tide. Industry nearby affects water quality, and strong currents run on big days.

Getting there

From Gijón, take the old road towards Avilés and turn off for Candás and Luanco. The Xivares sign is easy to miss. The beach car park fills in summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
An exposed beach that picks up swell easily for much of the year. It is at its best in autumn and winter, when the river mouth banks line up at low tide.
Crowd and vibe
Quiet on weekdays but crowded at weekends, with 10 to 20 surfers on a normal good day. Most come from nearby Gijón and Candás.
Camping and vans
Camping Buenavista and Camping Perlora are both in Perlora, about 3 km west, and open almost all year. Vans can stay up to 48 hours at the free área de autocaravanas in Candás. Nearest campsite about 3 km away.
Facilities
Surf guides list only the beach car park, which fills in summer.
Water quality
The beach faces the Aboño industrial area and its river, and surf guides list pollution as a hazard. It is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list and no official rating was found.
