Poniente is a man-made beach west of the old town, beside Gijón's marina and tucked inside the harbour walls. It was built in the early 1990s on a former dock. It is a storm refuge only: it needs a huge north-west or north swell, around 6–7 m offshore, to get waves. Then it gives smaller, cleaner peaks than the open coast, the longest a left over a stone platform in the middle. It is quieter than San Lorenzo.

When it works

✓ A giant north-west or north swell at mid to high tide, with a south, south-east or east wind.

When it doesn't

✕ Almost always flat, since anything below a major storm swell does not reach it; low tide stops it breaking, and strong west to south-west wind hits it hardest.

  • boats

Local tips

Only worth checking when the open coast is huge. It breaks from mid to high tide; at low tide it doesn't. Expect 10 to 20 surfers on the rare good days.

Getting there

It is a city beach beside the marina in central Gijón, with parking, showers, lifeguards and accessible paths.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very fickle. The harbour walls block almost all swell, so it is usually flat and only breaks in big winter storms.
Crowd and vibe
On the rare days it works, expect 10 to 20 surfers, fewer than at San Lorenzo. In summer the sand is packed with bathers rather than surfers.
Camping and vans
The free Parking de Poniente by Moreda park has about 10 van spaces, and the área de autocaravanas at El Arbeyal (72 hours max) is about 2 km west. The nearest campsite is Camping Gijón at El Rinconín, about 3 km east and open June to September. Nearest campsite about 3 km away.
Facilities
Showers, foot taps, summer lifeguards, an accessible ramp, children's play areas and plenty of bars and shops in the Poniente district.
Water quality
This is a man-made beach inside the harbour, built with sand dredged from the Gozón coast. It is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list and no official rating was found.
