Campelo is a small sand cove south of Valdoviño, framed by cliffs that shelter it from the wind. Its hollow, powerful waves made it one of the Galician top 16 beaches. Depending on the shifting sandbanks, there are lefts and rights at either end and a peak in the middle. It works with little swell, from under 1 m up to about 2.5 m. Bigger days get hard to paddle out, and the currents and the rocks at either end demand respect.

Local tips
A rip to the left of the rocks pulls out through the channel. It helps you paddle out, but it is no place for beginners on bigger days. The rocks along the shore become a problem as the tide rises. Watch from the lookout before going down, and wait your turn, as a well-established local crew surfs here.
Getting there
Signposted off the road from Ferrol to Valdoviño, then a steep path down. Bring everything you need, as there are no shops or kiosks.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It works on small swells from the north-west and picks them up well. The high cliffs block much of the wind, so it can stay clean when open beaches nearby are messy. The sandbanks move a lot, so the shape changes from month to month.
- Crowd and vibe
- Weekdays are often empty, but weekends and summer get crowded. A close-knit local crew knows the rocks and currents. They're not hostile, but they expect you to watch first, wait your turn and not show off.
- Camping and vans
- The nearest campsite is Camping Valdoviño, near Praia da Frouxeira, about 6.5 km away and open from June to mid-October. Vans can also use the paid A Frouxeira camper park in Valdoviño, about 7 km away. Nearest campsite about 6.5 km away.

- No facilities at all: no bar, kiosk, toilets or lifeguards, so bring everything with you.
