San Xurxo is one of Ferrol's reference beaches: sand and rock among dunes and cliffs north of the city, in a protected natural area. It is best known for a long, intense left at the southern end that peels along the rocks next to a paddling channel; its steep wall is good for turns. The rights are shorter and hollower. On big days a powerful peak breaks both left and right in front of the rocks near the campsite, at the northern end. It works all year and handles big swells.

Local tips

The south left works best at low to mid tide by the rocks; paddle out in the channel beside them. The northern peak is not for beginners. A strong rip can make it hard to get back to the beach. The frequent wind also brings windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Getting there

On the coast road from Ferrol, with several access points and a large car park that fills in summer. There are showers and toilets. It has a Blue Flag (2026). Older surf guides say there are no lifeguards, but Blue Flag beaches have them in summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
Open and exposed, it works all year and holds big swells better than most beaches nearby. The catch is the wind: it blows here a lot, and northerlies often spoil it.
Crowd and vibe
It is a popular local spot, so the main peaks get busy when it's good. In summer the car park fills up, and windy days bring windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Camping and vans
Camping As Cabazas, by the north end of the beach area, is about 2 km from the south peak and takes tents and autocaravanas. Ferrol's free área de autocaravanas is in town at A Malata, about 6.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Big car park, showers, toilets and bins; older surf guides say there are no lifeguards, but as a 2026 Blue Flag beach it should have summer lifeguard cover.
Water quality
San Xurxo holds a 2026 Blue Flag, which requires excellent results in the official water tests.
