Ponzos is a short, powerful beach in the Covas parish of Ferrol, in a protected rural setting with excellent water. Its shifting peaks break over sandbanks among rocks, giving short, often hollow, good-quality waves. It works with little swell and is sheltered from straight westerly wind, though less than neighbouring Santa Comba. Above about 2 m it gets heavy and dangerous.

Local tips

A shipwreck lies on the left side and shows at low tide. It gets busy with locals and bodyboarders when it's good; weekdays are much quieter.

Getting there

From Covas, turn off in the middle of the village and follow the signs. The car park holds about 50 to 100 cars, with showers and toilets. There are surf schools nearby.

Travel notes

How often it works
It works all year and even on small swells. It faces north, so it is a good back-up when strong westerly storms wreck the more open beaches.
Crowd and vibe
Weekdays are quiet. When the waves are good, or when bigger spots are too big to surf, it fills up with local surfers and bodyboarders.
Camping and vans
Camping As Cabazas, on the Covas road near A Fragata beach, is about 3 km away and takes tents and autocaravanas, with waste-water emptying. Ferrol's free área de autocaravanas is in town at A Malata. Nearest campsite about 3 km away.
Facilities
Large car park, showers, toilets and bins, surf schools nearby, and summer lifeguards that come with its Blue Flag.
Water quality
Ponzos won back its Blue Flag in 2026, which requires excellent results in the official water tests.
