La Palmera is the small town beach of Candás, a shell-shaped cove of about 250 m beside the fishing harbour. It faces east, away from the open sea, so normal swells barely reach it. When a strong north-west swell closes out the open beaches, it becomes a refuge for local surfers, with lefts and rights over sand and rock that can be good quality. Most days the waves are small and soft.

Local tips
Check it when the open beaches from Xivares to Verdicio are too big. In summer the beach fills with swimmers, so keep clear of them.
Getting there
The beach is in the town centre by the harbour, with a promenade linking it to Carranques, Huelgues, El Tranqueru and Xivares.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Sheltered, so it needs a strong north-west swell and is often flat or small, above all in summer. It is a back-up for big, stormy days rather than an everyday spot.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually 10 to 20 surfers when it works, mostly locals from Candás and Gijón, as it is one of the few places that is clean on big days.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Perlora and Camping Buenavista are in Perlora, about 0.5 km and 2 km south-east. Vans can use the free área de autocaravanas in Candás. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Toilets, showers, parking and a promenade, with a surf school, a surf shop and plenty of bars and restaurants in town.
- Water quality
- The EU rated the bathing water at La Palmera Excellent every season from 2016 to 2025.
