San Lorenzo is Gijón's city beach, a 1.5 km arc of sand below the promenade with peaks breaking left and right along it. The mid-bay banks close out quickly; the better bank is at the east end by the mouth of the Piles river (La Roca). At low tide on bigger swells, a long right can form at the point. It is the busiest surf spot in Asturias, with surf shops, a club, schools and city surfers at every tide, and a good place to learn. The water near the river can be dirty after rain.

When it works

✓ A 1.2–2.5 m north-north-west to north swell on a rising tide from low to mid, with a south or south-east wind.

When it doesn't

✕ High tide brings backwash off the sea wall, a northerly wind ruins it, and big swells close out the bay.

  • rips
  • pollution

Local tips

Stairs 9 and 10 on the promenade are the traditional meeting point for surfers. On good days the water is packed with boards and some find the crowd rude, so pick your peak with care. Schools and city surfers are out at every tide, but low tide and the rising tide are best.

Getting there

It runs along the city promenade. Parking, public showers, surf shops and bars are all a few minutes' walk away.

Travel notes

How often it works
It needs some swell, but as a wide, open city beach it picks up most north-west swells and is surfable on many days through autumn and winter. Summer is often small.
Crowd and vibe
Very crowded on good days and at weekends, as it is Gijón's home beach. Board traffic is heavy and some visitors find the west corner less polite, so pick a quieter peak.
Camping and vans
Camping Gijón sits on the coast at El Rinconín, about 1.5 km from the break, but it only opens from June to September. Camping Deva, open all year, is about 4 km inland of the city. Vans can stay up to 72 hours at the free área de autocaravanas at El Arbeyal, by the El Musel port road. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
Facilities
A full city beach: toilets, showers, summer lifeguards, first aid, board and sunshade hire, a nautical club, surf shops and schools, and bars along the promenade.
Water quality
San Lorenzo is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list, and surf guides flag pollution. Coal from the Castillo de Salas wreck of 1986 still turns up in the water and sand.
