Luanco beach, also called Santa Marina, is the town beach of Luanco on the sheltered east side of Cabo Peñas. It faces east, so the cape blocks most swell and summer is usually flat. In a strong north-west swell, a short, fast right breaks over sand and rock and can barrel. Only a few locals surf it, and it is clean when westerly winds wreck the open coast.

When it works

✓ A strong north-west swell of 3 m or more wrapping round Cabo Peñas, around low to mid tide, with a west, south-west or south wind.

When it doesn't

✕ Normal swells do not reach it, and any east or north-east wind blows straight in.

  • reef

Local tips

Save it for big north-west storms with westerly wind, when the west side of the cape is out of control. Watch the rocks at lower tides.

Getting there

The beach lies in front of the town promenade, so access and parking are in Luanco itself.

Travel notes

How often it works
Sheltered and fickle. It needs a strong north-west swell to wrap round the cape, so it works only on some winter days, but it then often has the cleanest waves around.
Crowd and vibe
Rarely crowded: surf guides describe a handful of locals who know the wave. Be patient and respectful in the small take-off zone.
Camping and vans
Camping El Molino is by Bañugues beach, about 2 km north-west, open all year except December. Next to it is a paid área de autocaravanas that opens in summer and at weekends. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Luanco is a fishing town with toilets, showers, parking, bars, restaurants and shops right behind the beach.
Water quality
The EU rated the bathing water Excellent every season from 2015 to 2025.
