Carcans Plage is a small, low-key resort about 10 km north of Lacanau, set between the dunes and the forest near Lake Hourtin-Carcans. It is an open sand-bottom beach break with several peaks along the beach, usually a clear right-and-left peak near the centre whose quality depends on how the banks have settled. Most days the waves come as walls rather than barrels, though a strong north-west swell with an east wind can give proper tubes. With surf schools on the beach and smaller line-ups than Lacanau, it suits learners in summer and intermediates the rest of the year.

Local tips
The banks move often with the tide and swell, so watch for a while before choosing a peak and come back at a different tide if it is not working. The rising tide is usually best. Strong baïne currents form along the beach, so learners should stay in the lifeguarded surf zone. The centre of the beach is busy in summer; walking north or south gives quieter peaks, and autumn brings both better waves and fewer people.
Getting there
From Bordeaux take the road towards Lacanau, then Sainte-Hélène and Carcans, and follow signs to Carcans-Océan; the beach is at the end of the avenue des Sables, close to the resort's shops and campsite. Several surf schools, including the Carcans Océan Surf Club, teach on the beach.
