The Plage Centrale, also called the Grande Plage, is the main beach of Lacanau-Océan and the busiest surf spot in Gironde. Rock jetties built to protect the seafront from erosion frame the beach and keep the sandbanks fairly stable, giving A-frame peaks between them: often a right in front of the lifeguard post and a left-and-right peak by the north jetty. Waves can be powerful and hollow on a good bank, but in summer they are mostly small, gentle and full of surf-school lessons. It suits everyone from first-timers in July to experienced surfers on autumn swells.

Local tips
Peaks drift north and south of the main spot, so if the line-up in front of the lifeguard post is packed, look along the beach. Stay away from the rock jetties, where the current pulls hardest, and in summer respect the separate bathing and surfing zones. Go early: wind and crowds both build through the day. From September most visitors leave and the waves usually improve.
Getting there
Lacanau-Océan is about 40–45 minutes' drive from Bordeaux, and buses run from Bordeaux to the end of the line in town; the beach is visible as you arrive from the main road into the resort. There is a summer lifeguard post, and surf schools and board hire are everywhere.
History
Local surfers ran the first pro contest here in September 1979; it became the Lacanau Pro in 1983 and is one of Europe's oldest pro events, with past competitors including Tom Curren, Kelly Slater and Wayne Bartholomew.
