Le Lion is the southernmost beach of Lacanau, a long open stretch backed by pine forest and high dunes roughly halfway between Lacanau-Océan and Le Porge. Like the rest of this coast it is a beach break shaped by baïnes, the hollows behind sandbars, so peaks pop up in different places from week to week. When a bank lines up it gives long, decent-sized walls with a steep drop, room for turns and the odd barrel on the sets. With no town behind it, it is a quieter alternative to the central Lacanau beaches for surfers who can read shifting banks and handle currents.

Local tips
The water straight in front of the access gets the most people in summer; walk a few hundred metres north or south for your own peak, accepting that the waves there can be less consistent. Look for the channels of the baïnes before paddling out, as they give an easy ride out but pull hard when the tide drains. Surf near the guarded zone if you are not sure of the currents, and avoid surfing alone outside summer.
Getting there
Drive south from Lacanau-Océan along the Route du Lion towards the forest house (Maison forestière du Lion), park in the pine forest and walk about ten minutes through the dunes. There are no facilities on the beach itself.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It gets the same swell as the other Lacanau beaches. The banks form around the baïnes, which are rip channels behind the sandbars, so they change through the season.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is quieter than the town beaches, except right in front of the access in summer. A short walk finds your own peak.
- Camping and vans
- Camping & Spa L'Océan and Yelloh! Village Les Grands Pins in Lacanau-Océan are about 5.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 5.5 km away.
- Facilities
- You park in the pine forest and walk about ten minutes. There are no facilities on the beach.
- Water quality
- We found no monitoring point on this beach. The nearest one, Super Sud, about 2 km north, was rated good from 2022 to 2025, but one of its six 2026 samples failed.
