San Martín, also called Portiellu or Potiellu, is a small north-facing cove at the east end of Celorio. It takes its name from the ruined Romanesque hermitage beside it. It sits behind rocks and only breaks when the swell has some size. Then it gives short, fun peaks off a clean sandbar between reefs, soft enough for all levels, beginners included. It is best on a low, rising tide.

When it works

✓ A 1.5–2.5 m north-west swell as the tide starts to rise from low, with a south or south-east wind; a light north-east is fine.

When it doesn't

✕ Small swells don't get past the rocks, and high tide shuts it down as parts of the beach disappear.

Local tips

Aim for the start of the rising tide. On good days, expect a small group of 10 to 20 surfers.

Getting there

Travel notes
