La Cueva (Playa de Cueva) is a 400 m crescent of sand and stones between cliffs at the mouth of the Esva river. It lies in Valdés, east of Luarca, between Cadavedo and Luarca. Several peaks break left and right on the river sandbanks on north to north-west swell, from fun to hollow and fast. It is best from low tide into the rising mid tide. The river current pulls hard, so local knowledge matters; it is usually uncrowded.

Local tips
The current from the Esva is the main hazard. If you don't know the spot, don't surf alone. Low tide and the first half of the rising tide are best.
Getting there
Turn off the N-634 towards Caroyas and drive down to the beach esplanade. Or park on the Canero road and walk in on one of two paths, through the forest or along the river. The lane is narrow and not suitable for motorhomes. There are no services.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fairly regular. It faces open sea to the north-west and gets good waves on many days of the year, but it needs some swell to start.
- Crowd and vibe
- Quiet, with only a few surfers even at weekends. It is a beach in the middle of nature, but the river current makes it a spot for confident surfers.
- Camping and vans
- No campsite by the beach, and camper vans are not allowed down the narrow lane. The nearest campsites are Camping Taurán near Luarca, about 6.5 km west (summer only), and La Regalina in Cadavedo, about 7 km east. Nearest campsite about 6.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Almost nothing: one guide mentions a small beach bar, but there are no surf services, so bring what you need.
- Water quality
- Blue Flag beach on the 2026 list. It sits at the mouth of the Esva river.
