Doniños is a nearly 2 km sand beach west of Ferrol, backed by dunes, pine forest and the Doniños lagoon. It is one of the Galician top 16 beaches and one of the best-known spots around Ferrol. Fully open to the Atlantic, it is very consistent all year, and many peaks give fast, powerful lefts and rights. The northern O Outeiro end has the best lefts, from hollow low-tide tubes to long rides, and a rip channel by the rocks. The southern Penencia end is hollow and popular with bodyboarders. Small, clean days suit beginners.

Local tips
The lefts at the north end are the pick. Above about 1 m, stay away from the south end: a rip there carries surfers out and down the coast. Another current runs along the rocks on the north side. Don't arrive in a big group, and respect the local crew.
Getting there
From Ferrol take the San Xurxo road and turn off for Doniños at Valón. O Outeiro, at the north end, has a large car park; Punta Penencia, at the south end, has a smaller one. Blue Flag, with lifeguards in summer.
History
The remains of an 18th-century coastal gun battery survive at the beach. It was part of Ferrol's defences.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It is a swell magnet. Facing straight into the Atlantic, it picks up even small swells, so there are waves here most of the year.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is the busiest beach around Ferrol: weekdays can be quiet, but weekends get crowded, mostly at the O Outeiro peaks. Some visitors report an unfriendly local crew, while others say it's overstated. Turning up alone or in a small group and being polite goes a long way.
- Camping and vans
- Camping As Cabazas is about 5 km north, with a bike lane from the campsite to Doniños. Ferrol's free área de autocaravanas at A Malata is about 6.5 km away. Locals don't like people camping in the pinewood by the lagoon. Nearest campsite about 5 km away.
- Facilities
- Beach bars, showers, bins, large car parks and a lifeguard post in summer, with extra watch at both ends because of the currents.
- Water quality
- Doniños holds a 2026 Blue Flag, which requires excellent results in the official water tests.
