Playa España is a north-facing sandy cove between rock platforms on the Villaviciosa–Gijón border. It picks up north-west and north swell well. Fast, powerful peaks break close to shore on both sides of the bay, over sand and flat rock, and can form tubes on the right day. Regulars call it underrated, but the rocks on the edges and under the water reward local knowledge.

Local tips
Mid tide is the time, especially on the rise. Rocks show at low tide, so take a look before paddling out. It is a meeting point for local surfers and gets busy in summer and at weekends.
Getting there
It is signposted off the road from Gijón towards Villaviciosa, about 10 km out. Parking is a few minutes' walk away. There are showers and summer lifeguards, but no public transport.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Very consistent, with surf reports counting around 150 surfable days a year. The cove faces straight into north and north-west swell, so it often has waves when sheltered beaches are flat.
- Crowd and vibe
- Quiet on weekdays but crowded at weekends, because Gijón is only a short drive away. Several peaks help spread people out, and it is a well-known meeting point for young local surfers.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Playa España is just a few metres from the beach in Quintes. It closes from 20 September until Easter. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Showers, food and drink, parking and lifeguards every day from 20 June to 20 September; there is no public transport.
- Water quality
- The EU rated the water Good, one step below the top grade, in every season from 2020 to 2025. It does not hold a Bandera Azul.
