Peñarrubia is a rugged beach below red cliffs east of Gijón, mostly used by naturists. Long lefts and rights break far out over sand, flat rock slabs and cobbles, and it holds heavy swell up to around 3–4 m. It works on north-north-west and north swells, best on low and rising tides. Some find the reef fun rather than dangerous, but the rocky bottom and strong currents make it a spot for experienced surfers.

Local tips
Low to mid tide is best. The waves break a long way out, so be ready for a long paddle. Spring and autumn are popular times.
Getting there
Take the GI-2 towards La Providencia, or walk from the Paseo del Muro at Cervigón. About 200 steep steps lead down the cliff. There are no services on the beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It needs a solid north-west swell to wake up, so it is mostly an autumn and winter spot. When it does break it holds big swells well, and the main peak stays in the same place.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually quiet, with 10 to 20 surfers at most and often only a handful on weekdays. The line-up is mostly Gijón regulars and is relaxed if you show respect.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Gijón sits on the coast at El Rinconín, about 1 km from the break, but it only opens from June to September. Camping Deva, open all year, is about 4 km inland of the city. Vans can stay up to 72 hours at the free área de autocaravanas at El Arbeyal, by the El Musel port road. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- There are showers and summer lifeguards, but no bar or surf school, and the way down is a long, steep stairway.
- Water quality
- Peñarrubia is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list, and old surfer reports call the water fairly polluted. No official rating was found.
