Plage du Loch (also spelt Loc'h) is the busiest and most reliable surf beach around Lorient, about 600 m of sand in front of the Fort du Loc'h with several peaks and scattered rocks. It is exposed to west and south-west swell and works on a great many days of the year, holding a good swell up to around 2.5 m. The waves are a little hollower than at the neighbouring beaches, so stronger surfers favour it, and it regularly hosts local and regional competitions. Expect a crowded line-up, especially at weekends.

Local tips

The south end near the outflow of the Étang du Loch can give a longer left at mid tide when there is enough swell, while the short, shallow peaks at the far south suit bodyboarders. Watch for rocks in front of the campsite section. In summer the bathing zone and surf schools take up much of the beach, so surf early or late, and respect priority in the crowded main peak.

Getting there

Plage du Loch is on the coast road (D152) at Guidel-Plages, with parking behind the beach; on contest days in high season the car parks fill early in the morning. A summer lifeguard post has toilets and showers nearby.

History

Guidel has held the French 'Ville de surf' label since 2015, and the West Surf Association, its long-standing club, runs competitions on these beaches.

Travel notes

How often it works
It is the most dependable wave around Lorient. It catches nearly every west to south-west swell, about 150 days a year according to wannasurf. It gets small and soft in summer and at high tide.
Crowd and vibe
It is often crowded, especially at weekends, and it is the young local crew's main spot. The level is higher than at nearby beaches, so respect who has priority on the main peak.
Camping and vans
Camping de la Plage and Camping de Pen er Malo at Fort-Bloqué are about 1.5 km south. Vans can stay up to 24 hours in the free La Falaise parking area, about 1 km north. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
Facilities
In July and August there is a lifeguard post with toilets and showers. The Guidel-Plages shops, bars and surf schools are a short walk away.
Water quality
The Le Loch monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and all 2026 samples were good.
