Local tips

Summer has small, soft waves on the inside for learning; autumn (September to November) brings bigger surf for experienced surfers. The road over the mountain is narrow with hairpin bends and sheep on the road. Water is about 5–7 °C in late winter and up to about 16–18 °C in late summer: a 5/4 with boots, gloves and a hood from autumn to spring.

Getting there

Narrow road over the Hoddevik mountain pass. A free car park is near the beach, but camping there is not allowed.

Travel notes

How often it works
Hoddevik is open to Atlantic swell from the west and north-west and gets waves on most days through autumn and winter; the mountains keep a lot of wind out. Summer is smaller.

Busy by Norwegian standards in summer with surf schools; quieter outside the holidays.

Hoddevik Strandcamp is on the north side of the beach (seasonal; it closed on 10 October in 2026). Wild camping is not allowed in Hoddevik. Nearest campsite about 0.4 km away.
Facilities
Stad Surfing runs the only café and a surf school; a 24-hour self-service snack bar near the car park. There is no shop, restaurant or fuel; the nearest shop is about 20 km away.
