Itzurun is Zumaia's surf beach, a 270 m cove below cliffs of up to 150 m made of flysch, layers of rock tilted on end, in the Basque Coast Geopark. It faces the open sea and has peaks in both directions on sand and rock, and it starts breaking from about one metre of north to north-west swell. Low tide gives softer waves, mid tide brings faster and hollower ones, and at high tide the sand disappears and the backwash off the cliffs creates a shorebreak that bodyboarders enjoy. The western side, near San Telmo, is shallower and rockier.

Local tips
Beginners should stay in the middle of the beach at lower tides. Leave the San Telmo end to experienced surfers because of the rocks and shallow water. It is the local favourite and gets busy, so give the regulars room.
Getting there
A footpath leads down from Zumaia town, and there is regulated parking in the nearby streets in summer. Lifeguards, showers and a beach bar run in season, and Euskotren trains stop in Zumaia.
