Kerguélen is a long beach on the western side of Larmor-Plage, best known for its large sailing and watersports centre rather than for surf. The Île de Groix sits almost directly offshore, so it only breaks when a solid swell wraps into the Lorient roads, typically a handful of days in winter. Off the beach a small reef, sometimes called the Kotron, then gives short, fun lefts and rights between rocky patches, a spot also used by windsurfers for wave riding. Very little is written about it.

Local tips

Rides are short and the reef has to be threaded between rocks, so look at it from the shore before paddling out and get a sense of where the rock patches sit. Sailing-school traffic and moorings are part of the scene here, so keep clear of boats. If the exposed beaches at Guidel and Ploemeur are maxed out, check Toulhars a little further east as well.

Getting there

Follow the Larmor-Plage signs from Lorient towards Kerguélen; parking is by the nautical centre and the beach, with a wooden staircase down to the sand and a bus and boat-bus stop a few hundred metres away.

Travel notes

How often it works
The island of Groix blocks most swell, so it breaks only about five days a year, according to wannasurf. It needs a big winter swell of 2 metres or more.
Crowd and vibe
On the rare days it breaks, only a handful of surfers turn up, along with windsurfers. In summer the beach is very busy with families.
Camping and vans
VVF Camping de la Fontaine is in the Kerguélen park next to the beach. A motorhome area with 22 pitches is on Rue de Quéhello, within walking distance. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
There is a watersports centre, a bar-restaurant above the beach, and lifeguards in July and August. A bus stop is about 450 m away.
Water quality
The Kerguélen monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and all 2026 samples were good. It is inside Lorient harbour, so be careful after heavy rain.
