Toulhars is a sheltered beach inside the Lorient roads, protected from most swell by the Île de Groix and the Gâvres peninsula. It is the local fallback for winter storms: it only breaks a few times a year, when a big swell is too much for the exposed Guidel and Ploemeur beaches. On those days it gives lefts and rights over sand and uneven rock that can turn hollow as the tide rises, though rarely with much size. Word travels fast and it gets crowded with surfers driving over from Guidel.

Local tips
Check the forecast for a big, westerly swell and a north to north-west wind; the shelter means a north-westerly that ruins the open coast can be fine here. Sources disagree on tide, but the rising tide is when it tends to get hollow. Expect a packed line-up when it works and share the few peaks patiently. Water quality has been questioned after reports of sewage discharges, so avoid surfing after heavy rain.
Getting there
The beach is on the Boulevard de Toulhars in Larmor-Plage, with a free car park and toilets close to the sand.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It is sheltered, so it rarely breaks, about five days a year according to wannasurf. It needs a big winter swell that is too much for the open coast.
- Crowd and vibe
- When it breaks, word spreads and the few peaks get packed, so be patient. In summer it is a family beach rather than a surf spot.
- Camping and vans
- A motorhome area with 22 pitches on Rue de Quéhello is about 1 km away. VVF Camping de la Fontaine is in the nearby Kerguélen park. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- There are accessible toilets, a free car park, beach wheelchairs and lifeguards in July and August. Shops are a short walk away.
- Water quality
- It was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, but one 2026 sample failed. In February 2026 people reported stomach illness after bathing, and the town tested the water again. It is inside Lorient harbour, so avoid it after heavy rain.
