Merón is a small 200 m cove of sand and gravel at a little river mouth west of Rodiles. It is on the Asturian Jurassic Coast, with dinosaur tracks in the cliffs. A long right peels off the rocks into the sand, with room for turns. It needs a mid-size swell and low to mid tide, and then suits most levels; big winter swells make it fast and powerful, for advanced surfers. It is far quieter than its famous neighbour.

When it works

✓ A 1.2–2 m north-west or north-north-west swell at low to mid tide, with a south to south-west wind.

When it doesn't

✕ High tide and northerly wind both shut it down, and small summer swells don't do much.

January, February, March, October, November, December

Local tips

Low tide is best for the right. Expect 10 to 20 surfers on good days, far fewer than at Rodiles. Mind the rocks under the section nearest the shore.

Getting there

A narrow concrete lane leads to a small car park, or you can walk in through the eucalyptus. There are showers and a grassy area. Public transport is poor.
