La Barra is the famous left at the mouth of the Villaviciosa estuary. It peels along the sandbar beside the training wall (the stone wall that guides the river) at the west end of Rodiles beach. On its day it is long, hollow and fast, with rides of around 100 m and quality tube sections. It is widely called the best wave in Asturias and one of the best in Spain, and it is often compared with Mundaka. It has been listed among the world's top 100 waves. Good days draw surfers from the whole region, and the water is crowded and firmly local.

When it works

✓ A 2–3 m north-west or west swell around low tide, rising or falling, with a light south or south-west wind.

When it doesn't

✕ High tide switches it off, small swells and onshore wind spoil it, and a northerly wind or an oversized swell turns the bar into chaos; sandbar changes can also spoil it for long periods.

Watch out for

  • crowds
  • localism
  • currents
  • rips

Best months

January, February, March, October, November, December

Local tips

The take-off zone is small and the local crowd is tight. Wait your turn and be friendly; visitors have reported being pushed out. Low tide is when it works, and the estuary current runs hard around the bar. Quieter weekdays are the best chance of a wave.

Getting there

Park in the Rodiles beach car park. Walk west through the eucalyptus and over the dune boardwalks to the river mouth.

History

Surfers see plans to dredge the estuary mouth for a marina as a threat to the sandbar that shapes the wave.

Travel notes

How often it works
Works fairly often in autumn and winter, but only when a solid swell meets low tide. The wave depends on a sandbar at the river mouth, and when the bar shifts it can stay poor for months.
Crowd and vibe
Usually empty on weekdays and crowded at weekends, when the region's best surfers turn up. Surf guides list localism as the main danger, so keep a low profile, smile and wait your turn.
Camping and vans
Camping Playa de Rodiles – Fin de Siglo, Camping Nery and Camping La Ensenada are all in Seloriu, under a kilometre from the bar, but they open mainly in summer. Camping Villaviciosa at La Rasa, about 5 km away, closes only in December and January. The free área de autocaravanas in Villaviciosa town has 8 places for up to 24 hours. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
No services at the river mouth itself; the beach car park, toilets, showers, bars and summer lifeguards are a short walk east.
Water quality
The Rodiles sampling point, classed as estuary water, was rated Excellent by the EU every season from 2015 to 2025, and the beach holds a Bandera Azul in 2026.
