O Vao is a semi-urban beach in Coruxo, Vigo, next to the bridge to Toralla island. Like Samil, it is sheltered by the Cíes Islands and needs a large winter storm swell to push into the inner ría; then it has short, fast peaks over sand. Around high tide, the bridge pillars bounce the waves into wedging peaks that suit bodyboarders. It has become popular with Vigo surfers and gets crowded as soon as it works, though it is calmer than Patos.

Local tips

Go early, before the afternoon sea breeze picks up. On really heavy days, a hollow left breaks on the reef off Toralla island. It is about a 10-minute paddle and only for experienced surfers.

Getting there

Parking by the beach, with a pine-shaded promenade, showers, toilets and summer lifeguards.

History

The remains of a Roman villa have been dug up at Toralla, next to the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
Only works in big winter storms. It sits in the inner ría behind the Cíes Islands, so normal swells arrive weak or not at all.
Crowd and vibe
Crowded when it works, and busier every year. Many Vigo surfers come for a calmer session than at Patos. In summer the beach is packed with swimmers.
Camping and vans
The nearest campsite is Camping Playa América in Nigrán, about 7 km south (March to September). Vans can use the paid Parking de La Guía across the city. Nearest campsite about 7 km away.
Facilities
Showers, toilets, summer lifeguards, bars and restaurants, and a water-sports company running courses all year.
Water quality
Holds Bandera Azul for 2026, which needs excellent bathing-water results the season before.
