Patos, in Nigrán about 10 km from Vigo, is the best-known surf beach of the Ría de Vigo and the closest beach break to the city. The 1.4 km beach runs between Monteferro and Prado and faces the Cíes Islands. The islands block much of the swell, so it needs a decent north-west swell, and the shifting sand often gives short peaks both ways that close out. The north end is called Prado or As Cañas. It has sand with some rock, is stronger and more consistent, and holds a little more size. Short rights appear at A Cala and O Home at low tide, and several surf schools and Vigo surfers fill the water all year.

When it works

✓ A 2–3 m north-west or west swell with a south or south-east wind around mid to high tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Small swells, which the Cíes Islands block, any wind with west or north in it, and summer, which is usually flat.

Watch out for

  • crowds
  • rocks
  • localism

Best months

January, February, March, April, October, November, December

Local tips

Head to Prado at the north end for more power and a bit more space. Schools take the inside near the shore, so give them room. In the summer holidays, park a bit further away.

Getting there

Signposted, with several car parks (over 100 spaces at Prado), showers, toilets, cafés and a promenade. There are lifeguards in summer.

History

Patos, and Prado in particular, is seen as the cradle of surfing around Vigo. Generations of local surfers learned here, and it has hosted many competitions.

Travel notes

How often it works
Not a reliable spot. The Cíes Islands block most small swells, so it needs a fair north-west swell to break, and summer is mostly flat. Winter is the best season. The Prado end at the north picks up a bit more swell than the rest.
Crowd and vibe
One of the busiest beaches in Galicia, packed all year with surfers from Vigo and with surf school groups near the shore. Weekends are the worst, and visitors have reported a tense mood and some localism at the main peaks, so be patient and polite.
Camping and vans
The nearest campsite is Camping Praia América on Rúa Canido in Nigrán, open about March to September. Nigrán's tourism office lists no área de autocaravanas. The closest motorhome service point is a fuel station on the seafront in Baiona. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
Facilities
Showers, toilets, cafés and a promenade, summer lifeguards, and up to three surf schools with board rental.
Water quality
The town of Nigrán advertises Patos as a Blue Flag beach, but it is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list, and we found no official water rating to check.
