Alkolea, also called Punta Pitxarri, is a rocky cove in Mutriku near the border with Deba, below the Geopark cliffs. It has a long, fast, punchy left over rock and cobbles that guides rate highly. The cove faces roughly north-east and is not very exposed, so it needs a solid north to north-west swell to work. Its quality drops above about two metres, because the rocky bottom cannot handle that much water.

Local tips

Rocks can stick out of the water at low tide, so a fall can hurt: look at the line-up before you paddle out. You can check it from the coast road. It suits strong intermediate to expert surfers.

Getting there

You can see the cove from the coast road. A footpath runs down the cliff from the car park, about five minutes or more on foot, and there is a picnic area nearby.
