Pikua, known locally as El Muro (the wall), breaks at the western end of Ondarreta beach, near Chillida's Wind Comb sculptures. As the tide rises, swell bounces off the stone sea wall of the promenade and throws up a fast, hollow left over sand and rock. Because the bay is so sheltered, it needs a big, solid swell to break, but it then holds waves from about one to three metres. The rest of Ondarreta is a softer beach break that people use when Zurriola is too big.

Local tips

The wave breaks right next to the wall and rocks, so take off fast and know where you will kick out before you go. It works only on a few big days a year, so the local crowd turns out in force: wait your turn. A helmet is worth considering.

Getting there

It is at the far end of the Ondarreta promenade in the city, easy to reach on foot or by city bus, with metered parking in nearby streets.
