Zarautz is the longest beach in Gipuzkoa, about 2.5 km of sand that faces the open sea, and one of the best-known surf towns in Spain. People have surfed here since the 1960s, and surfing is part of everyday life in the town. Shifting banks give peaks in both directions along the whole beach, usually one to two metres, and it catches most north to north-west swells. The beach has hosted world and European tour events, and many surf schools work here all year.

Local tips
Summer brings small, gentle waves that suit learners, while autumn and winter bring bigger swells for experienced surfers. If the middle of the beach is crowded, walk along it to find a quieter peak, or drive along the coast to nearby coves. Rinse off after storms, because guides note that the water quality can drop.
Getting there
The beach runs along the town's long promenade, just off the A-8 motorway and the N-634. Euskotren trains and buses connect Zarautz with Donostia and Bilbao.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Wannasurf rates it regular.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is quiet on weekdays but crowded at weekends, with many beginners. On summer weekends parking is close to impossible.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Talaimendi is about 400 m from Zarautz beach, but it opens in summer only. Gran Camping Zarautz, on Talai-Mendi hill above the town, is open all year and takes vans. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- There are toilets, hot showers, changing rooms, bars, surf schools and board hire, lifeguards from 10:00 to 20:00 in season, and two underground car parks. Wannasurf warns of car theft in the small side streets.
- Water quality
- The Basque Government's 2026 rating is excellent for all three zones. But wannasurf says the east end of the beach can be badly polluted. The provincial beach page shows no Blue Flag, and we found no official note on run-off after rain.
